Recent Work

This is a selection of work I did over the past twelve months. Although I also worked on the visual design of some of these projects, I consider myself a web front-end developer: My main focus is on building accessible, standards-based user-interfaces with technologies such as HTML, CSS and JavaScript. Furthermore, I am a skilled ActionScript developer.
  • Chart-o-matic (charting framework)

Chart-o-matic is a light-weight and easy-to-use solution for embedding simple charts in web documents.

Build using JavaScript and ActionScript, Chart-o-matic enforces the accessibility of the visualized data through progressive enhancement: It takes data that was marked up using HTML tables and turns it into a bar-, line-, or pie-charts. Since the source data is availiable in the HTML document, user agents without support for Flash or JavaScript will display the raw data, while modern browsers will use the same information to draw a chart.

Initially developed as a part of my final year project at university, Chart-o-matic will soon be released to the public under BSD-Licence. For more information and a demonstration of the system, see the website linked below.

  • Luis und Laserpower (website/blog)

In November 2007, I was asked to create a new visual design for the Mannheim-based rock-band Luis und Laserpower. Working closely with the members of the band and their management, I created several graphical assets to be used in their future releases and merchandise, together forming a sort of "brand identity". I also designed the cover for Luis und Laserpower's first EP and a range of merchandise items, including stickers and t-shirts.

A major part of this assignment was designing and building a website for the band. The site is build upon the publishing-system Wordpress and all dynamic features of the front-end are created using unobtrusive JavaScript.

  • Primeval (game)

In November 2007 I build two flash games for the interactive agency Publicreative. The games are part of a website created to promote the television programme Primeval in the UK. "The Ultimate Fan Quiz" is a quiz game for fans of the show and "Rex" is a simple game of skill.

I developed the games from design mock-ups (Photoshop) provided by Publicreative, using Flash and ActionScript 2. The actual game mechanics of both games are build upon Publicreative's own generic game engines. Both games include leaderboard functionality, storing player's scores in a database using PHP/MySQL.

To see the games in action, go ahead. Try it yourself:

  • Roots Travel & Tours (website)

Roots Travel & Tours is a small travel organization located in Addis Abeba. The guys at Roots Travel spezialize in arranging tours to the various regions of Ethopia. I was asked to create a website to promote their services to German travellers.

Roots Travel didn't have a styleguide or something similar but they provided me with photos and printed promotional materials they had used in the past. I designed and build a website resembling the look of these assets. Apart from semantic HTML, CSS and a blend of JavaScript, I used the content management system Drupal. This project was especially interesting to me because it was my first experience of setting up Drupal all by myself.

  • Men In Trees (microsite)

Men In Trees is a television comedy series which is centered around a relationship coach played by popular actress Anne Heche. Publicreative were comissioned with a microsite and an extensive online campaign to promote the launch of the show in the UK.

When working in London for a few weeks in summer 2007, I build the site and several animated adverts for the campaign using Flash and ActionScript 2. The microsite loads its content from an external XML document and features scripted as well as tweened animation, flash video and history management (enabling deep-linking and the browsers back and forward buttons).

  • HoRST 2.0 (kiosk application)

The kiosk application HoRST is an integrated information and orientation system for the campus of HdM Stuttgart, my former university. Originally developed as a seminal project in 2006, the application is currently reworked by Matthias Palme and myself.

HoRST offers two different views of the campus and a search engine to seek for places, courses, events and employees. The application is run on several kiosk terminals located at significant places on the campus in Stuttgart-Vaihingen.

The application is not finished yet. For more information on this project, see the link below.
